Don’t be scammed during the 2010 census. With the U.S. Census process beginning, the BBB advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft.
“It’s imperative that consumers provide their information during the 2010 U.S. Census,” said Barry Goggin, president of the BBB serving northeast California. “Consumers need to understand what the Census Bureau actually does in order to avoid being scammed.”

As a result of the declining economy, the number of retailers closing their doors has increased substantially, leaving confused shoppers wondering what will happen to purchases they haven’t received, unused gift cards, and warranties.

Sometimes those “free trial” pop-ups bring more hassle than joy. The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of online ads promoting “free trial offers” that rely heavily on celebrity endorsements to sell acai-berry related weight loss products. The BBB has received thousands of complaints from consumers nationwide who thought they were signing up for a free-trial offer of acai berry weight loss products that were supposedly endorsed by Oprah, Rachel Ray and other celebrities. In the end, the free trial cost them, month after month.

Some local American Express Card holders have found multiple bogus charges on their monthly credit card statements from a company called 24 Hour Corp. Charges range from $20-$50 and appear sporadically over several months.

The Better Business Bureau is warning the public to be on alert for a scam that is targeting individuals seeking loans. In the last few days, the BBB has received reports from consumers who visited company websites that appeared to be legitimate, and applied for loans. After submitting their information they were contacted by company representatives and told they had been approved for a loan. However, in order to receive the loan, they were instructed to first pay an advance fee.
